If you look at his track record in the state of Gujarat, he has delivered on many of his electoral promises. While his economic achievements have been well documented by the media, his work on administrative, judicial, education and healthcare reforms is very significant and often ignored. If we look at IMPROVEMENT in many socio-economic indicators (over the last 10 years), his state outperforms most others in India. He has complemented multiple welfare schemes with an emphasis on double digit economic growth. This is important to ensure fiscal sustainability and helps create an “inclusive” growth model that everybody yearns for. It also helps lift millions of people out of poverty, while ensuring that jobs are being created through a business friendly environment.
The hope remains that Modi can scale up his work in Gujarat and meet expectations of the world’s largest electorate. The largest demographic of this being an aspiration middle class that is more demanding of results than promises. The beauty of our democracy is that the people will get a chance to evaluate his performance in exactly five years.
